Chapter Seven

"You look all spick-and-span," Regina said two days later when Joel wandered into the kitchen dressed in tight jeans and a blue button-down shirt, his hair still damp from his shower. "Dinner will be ready as soon as your father gets home."

"I'm not really hungry, thanks." He paused by the refrigerator long enough to pour a glass of milk, then leaned against the counter to drink it. "Lyle texted me. We're going out tonight, some party. He's picking me up in—" He glanced at the clock. "—ten minutes."

"Again?"

Joel shrugged. "It beats sitting home watching television. Don't worry, I'll be home early. I know I'm working again tomorrow to cover for Dad while he's helping out Russ."

"Just be careful, is all I ask."

"I'm not stupid, Mom. I won't go wandering down dark alleys now that I know what's out there." His face shadowed with pain for a moment before he pasted on a smile. "And I have condoms if that's what you meant."

"It was." A car horn beeped, and she rolled her eyes. "At least he could come to the door. Anyway, go, have fun. Behave."

With a grin as he pushed off the counter, Joel said, "Not sure I can have fun and behave at the same time." He stopped long enough to kiss her cheek and then left.

"So where's this party?" Joel asked as he got into the car.

"At Mac and Don's," Lyle told him as he pulled away from the curb. "It's Don's birthday, and they're going all out so it should be a blast."

"That'll be a change from last night."

"Says the man who danced with anyone who asked. Good thing you don't drink, or who knows whose bed you might have ended up in."

"Dancing beat listening to those bores expound on what classes they were going to take in the fall."

Lyle glanced over at him with a frown. "Hey, I was one of those 'bores', and it's important, as you'd know if you hadn't opted out of going to college."

Joel shrugged. "My folks need my help."

"Yeah, but…"

"Drop it, Lyle, okay?" Joel leaned his head back and closed his eyes. Last night hadn't been as bad as he'd let on to Lyle. He'd actually gotten a couple of offers, one from a seriously sexy guy about his own age. He had almost taken him up on it too but, at the last moment, backed out. Not tonight, though. Tonight, for once, he was going to have a couple of drinks and really let his hair down and go with the flow as they said. Then maybe he could wipe Vasile from his thoughts for good.

He shuddered at the memory of that night at the cemetery, heard Lyle ask what was wrong, and opened his eyes. "Nothing," he told him. Then he amended it when Lyle cocked an eyebrow. "I saw a really gross flick a couple of nights ago, and one of the scenes just popped into my head."

"Like blood and guts gross? I love those kind. Give me a good slasher movie, and I'm in heaven.
